The water at Miette Hot Springs is the hottest of any hot springs in the Canadian Rockies and it contains at least 8 naturally occurring minerals which will leave you both relaxed and revitalized after a good soak. Run by Parks Canada, Miette Hot Springs were first discovered in the 1870s and people have been taking advantage of their healing powers ever since. First Time to Jasper?

If this is your first visit to Jasper Alberta, we have a shortlist of things we believe you should absolutely not miss:

The Brewster Ice Explorer

One doesn’t often get the chance to ride a massive, terra tire vehicle specifically designed to track up the side of ancient glacial ice. It’s truly a once in a life time experience and well worth the trip.

Malign Lake Canyon Walk

Refreshing, stunning and wild, if you were to do just one walk in Jasper we would suggest this one.

Yellowhead Museum

The archives are particularly interesting, with business papers, diaries, memoirs, over 4,000 negatives, prints, albums and transparencies. Make an appointment!
The Current exhibition ‘Bears in the Alley’ is an interesting look at the current and past relationships between local Jasper residents and bears.

Some Local Favorites

We asked a Jasper local to give us her top 5 recommendations for a visitor to Jasper National Park, and here’s what she told us:

Drinks at the Jasper Park Lodge

The Emerald Lounge is possibly my favorite spot for a cocktail in the Rockies. The entire property of sprawling cabins and bungalows including the open plan lobby lounge with its relaxed yet sophisticated mountain charm evoke thoughts of the ultimate couture camping experience. Relax by the fire, read the news (on your mobile of course), play a quick game of chess or contemplate the colours of the lake. Come in your hiking boots or heels…

Air Jasper

Go retro in a Cessna. I don’t have anything against the heli tours but nothing beats the experience of a turbo 210. If you’re not planning on climbing the highest peak in the Rockies anytime soon I suggest the Mount Robson and Amethyst Lake tour. They also do custom tours! Bomber jackets not required…

Shop at Mountain Galleries

I never tire of this gallery, always fresh and energetic the store features Canadian artists in major and mid career. The owner, Wendy Wacko, has an incredible eye so it’s always worth having a good mooch around.

Mountain Goats

I’m not big on animal voyeurism but these mountain goats are truly magnificent and worthy of a good look. They are extremely hard to spot anywhere else in the National Parks so if you get a chance while you’re in Jasper, take it. Early morning is always best, grab a cappuccino and berry torte from Bear’s Paw Bakery. Mind your manners and don’t feed the wildlife.

Edith Cavell Meadows

If you’re wanting to do a proper hike in Jasper, Edith Cavell Meadows is the one. It’s got all the features of a true climb while offering less strenuous options for the not so adventurous (a short 1.6km self-guiding lake trail or an easy hike to the Angel Glacier lookout). Wildflowers galore, glistening glaciers, towering cliffs and a rough approach road make this a classic mountain hike. It take 5-6 hrs to complete the full 8.5km circuit.

Maligne Lake Cruise

A visit to Maligne Lake should really be on everyone’s itinerary when visiting Jasper National Park, and what better way to get the full experience than to take a Maligne Lake boat cruise to Spirit Island. The views you will experience include perhaps one of the most photographed scenes in the Canadian Rockies, and for good reason. The combination of the stunning blue of the lake and the majestic mountains surrounding it with their snow capped peaks will leave an impression that will linger long after you return home. Maligne Lake is located around 40km from Jasper Alberta.

Jasper from the Air

As magnificent as the Canadian Rockies are when viewed from the ground, there is something truly magical about seeing them from the air on one of the several airplane tours offered by Air Jasper. From the air you can simply cover a much larger distance and see how mountain peaks, valleys, lakes and rivers interconnect to form the huge areas of pristine wilderness that would take you days or weeks to cover on the ground. Tours are available to the Columbia Icefield, Maligne Lake, Mount Robson and Amethyst Lake and start at approx $185.00 for a 1hr 10min tour.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

There are few hotels in Jasper, or elsewhere in the Canadian Rockies, that have a more stunning setting than the the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Lying on the shores of Lake Annette with stunning views to Mount Edith Cavell beyond, the accommodation is spread across several cabin-style buildings on well manicured grounds. Although the accommodation is first class, the atmosphere is casual and a rustic elegance is apparent throughout the hotel. In the main lodge, the Great Hall is both cozy and impressive with its huge stone fireplace and the variety of restaurants means that there is really no need to leave the resort if you don’t wish to. A stay at the Jasper Park Lodge is a real Canadian Lodge experience and a reminder of the early days of Canadian Rockies tourism.

Riverside Mountain Cabins

The adventurer’s dream of staying in a mountain cabin becomes a reality at Alpine Village, just 2km south of Jasper. Choose between a one room cabin, a one bedroom cabin with separate living area, or a 2 bedroom suite. All cabins have a kitchen or kitchenette, and most have a wood burning fireplace for those cool Canadian Rockies evenings. The public grounds are extensive and the views are superb.
